Relief for Motorists as NMS Plans Hourly Parking

Motorists in Nairobi will soon benefit from hourly parking as the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) begin automated hourly parking following the presidents’ directive. NMS Director-General Mohammed Badi said that the city has already integrated the facilities in select areas.

The automated facilities are 70% complete in Desai and Park roads. Also, NMS will construct parking areas and automated facilities along Waiyaki Way, Thika Road, Lang’ata road, and Thika road for public service vehicles.

“We have integrated the automation of Desai Road, Machakos Bus Station, Sunken Car Park, and the Nairobi Law Courts into the Nairobi Revenue Service Programme,” Daily Nation quoted DG Mohammed Badi.

The hourly rates will help ease the burden of motorists who come to the CBD for short periods from paying the daily KSh 200 rate. Last year, High Court suspended an order by City Hall to double fees in the CBD, noting that consumers were struggling to provide for basic amenities.

Elsewhere, NMS is planning to shut down 80 illegal dumpsites in the city. Badi says that he will designate 35 official waste collection points and work together with the National Youth Service to aid in the collection. So far, the administration has identified 110 illegal sites and cleared 82 sites awaiting closure. Badi will also gazette legal solid waste dumpsite for public and private waste collection companies.
