The Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) has intensified efforts to commence the Nairobi railway upgrade project at a cost of Ksh2.5Billion.
Talking to Business Daily, Phillip Mainga, acting Kenya Railway Managing Director said the upgrade will target five stations in a park and ride model. In this case, commuters can leave their vehicles at the station and board a train to work.
Furthermore, the upgrade targets commuter lines from Nairobi Railway to Embakasi, Kikuyu, Ruiru, and Kahawa.
Mr. Mainga said that cabinet’s approval was the last hurdle facing implementation of the project.
The railway upgrade is expected to ease the traffic menace witnessed in the city. In this case, it will trasport between 130,000 and 200,000 commuters from the current 13,000 users.
