Nairobi’s ‘Nova Garage’ Aims to Bridge Africa-Europe Capital Divide

In a bid to institutionalize investment flows into Africa's burgeoning tech sector, organizers of Nova Garage have unveiled a multi-dimensional platform designed to turn raw innovation into scalable enterprises.

    • •The initiative, set to launch alongside the Africa Forward Summit on May 11, 2026, is a strategic collaboration between the Kenyan Foreign Affairs Ministry and the EDU AI framework.
    • •John Paul, co-founder of Nova Garage, describes the project not merely as an event, but as a long-term "economic engine".
    • •The primary objective is to facilitate a sustainable pipeline between Africa and Europe, allowing capital to flow directly into the hands of young innovators.

"We are looking at a long-term perspective of ultimately establishing more of a farm to which capital... can actually flow into Africa startups," Paul stated, emphasizing that the engagement extends far beyond a single summit.

    DRC Outpaces Kenya

The platform has already sparked significant continental interest, drawing over 250 applications from 22 countries by the April 23rd deadline. In a surprising shift in regional tech dominance, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) led the application pool with approximately 90 to 96 entries, surpassing Kenya’s 60 to 70 applications.

A panel of experts, coordinated with the French Africa Foundation, will select 15 finalists. These founders will deliver elevator pitches to an elite audience of 150 people, including, Heads of State, such as France’s Emmanuel Macron, Development Finance Leaders, including Makhtar Diop and Global CEOs

Adding a distinct cultural layer to the summit is the transformation of the iconic Kenyan matatu into a mobile innovation hub. Nick Mararo, CEO of Base Yetu, revealed a "Nganya" (custom matatu) outfitted as a mobile podcast and camera studio.

Dubbed "Passenger 001," the vehicle is expected to carry President Emmanuel Macronand President William Ruto to the event, where it will be officially autographed.

Following the summit, the studio will tour campuses across Kenya’s counties, aiming to reach 1 to 2 million young people over the next six months.

The vehicle serves as a "mobile Shark Tank," providing a safe, tech-enabled space for youth to pitch ideas and discuss issues like joblessness.

To ensure the longevity of these startups, Nova Garage has aligned with private sector partners like Microsoft Garage to provide educational programs that guide companies from seed stage to maturity.

The organizers intend to leverage the Nairobi Declaration, the summit’s expected outcome, to create a permanent framework for attracting investors.
