MTN Group subsidiary Bayobab Kenya has completed fibre network connecting Mombasa to Malaba and Busia on the Kenya-Uganda border, offering diversity and redundancy in delivering internet services.
- The network follows Kenya Railway’s metre gauge railway line route upto the border with Uganda, where it interconnects into Uganda for onward connectivity to Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
- It links the landlocked countries to subsea cables at the Port of Mombasa and is part of the company’s plan of building 135,000KM of proprietary fibre across Africa.
- The company is part of Bayobab Group, the digital infrastructure arm of MTN Group.
“This project is about connecting communities and businesses, creating opportunities, and delivering a modern connected to more people across the continent,” Bayobab Kenya’s Managing Director, Sylvia Anampiu said.
This new route represents a significant milestone in boosting reliability and ensuring low-latency connectivity inland and cross-border between the East and West coasts of Africa, a vital step towards enhancing the digital economy, trade, and economic growth within the region.
MTN rebranded the digital infrastructure arm from MTN Global Connect to Bayobab in 2023, and separated the entity into Bayobab Fibre and Bayobab Communication Platforms.
