Mpesa's Market Share in Tanzania increases to 41%

According to data from Tanzania’s Communication Regulatory Authority, Vodacom’s Mpesa increased its customer base, volume, and value of mobile money transactions in six months from December 2018 to June 2019.

Latest Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) figures indicate that M-Pesa’s value of mobile money transactions rose from TSh7.8 trillion in March to TSh8.3 trillion in June.

As of June 2019, there were six mobile money providers in Tanzania; Vodacom Mpesa (41% market share), Tigo Pesa (30%), Airtel Money (18%), Halotel Money (7%), EzyPesa (2%), and TTCL (2%).

Mpesa increased its market share after expanding its customer base from 9,014,088 in December 2018 to 9,378,738 in June this year.

    Lost Customers

However, the report shows that Tigo Pesa and Airtel Money, the second and third largest mobile money operators, had a decline in volume and value of transactions and between them lost 1.2 million customers in the six months.

In this case, Airtel Money lost 657,005 customers with the customer base declining from 4,848,545 clients in December 2018 to 4,191,540 customers in June 2019.

According to the report, Tigo Pesa lost 612,575 customers leading to customer base decline from 7,586,240 customers in December 2018 to 6,973,665 customers in June 2019.

On top of that, EzyPesa lost 170,327 customers lowering customer numbers from 546,353 customers in December 2018 to 376,026 customers in June this year.
