Morocco Reopens Airspace after 2-Month Hiatus

Morocco Reopens Airspace after 2-Month Hiatus

Morocco has reopened its airspace in a bid to breathe life into its crisis-hit tourism sector, two months after it cancelled commercial flights over coronavirus fears.

However, passengers heading to the country will still need to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 and produce a negative PCR test within the past 48 hours. On arrival, they will undergo further rapid tests and some will be chosen at random for another PCR test.

Morocco’s vital tourism sector has been battered by the pandemic and ensuing travel restrictions, with a 71% drop in arrivals in 2021 compared to 2019.

On the other hand, the country has begun the construction of a new $562 million vaccine plant with the capacity to produce 116 million vaccines in 2024. The plant will be a “fill and finish” site that imports components of vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, and blends them into vials for distribution in Morocco and the rest of the continent.
