More Than 33% of Companies Worldwide Experienced Ransomware Attack in the Last 12 Months

A new survey by the International Data Corporation (IDC) found that more than 33% of organizations around the world suffered a ransomware attack that hindered access to systems or data in the last 12 months. Some companies experienced multiple ransomware attacks in that period.

The worst affected organizations were companies based outside the US of which 37% experienced a ransomware attack or breach. Only 7% of companies in the US were affected.

According to the IDC survey, the manufacturing and finance industries reported the highest rate of ransomware attacks while the transportation, communication, and media industry had the lowest rate of ransomware attacks.

13% of the companies affected by the ransomware attacks did not pay a ransom. As per the findings, the average ransom payment was nearly $250,000, although some organizations paid ransoms as high as $1 million.

Frank Dickson, program vice president at IDC has described the ransomware attacks as the dark side of the digital transformation.
