More pain at the pump for Kerosene users in new fuel prices review

Households relying on Kerosene as a source of energy will continue to dig deep into their pockets to buy the commodity after monthly price review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

However, consumers relying on either Super Petrol or Diesel to power their cars and other machines got a marginal reprieve in the latest adjustment as the regulator reduced the prices of the two commodities by Sh0.66 per litre and Sh1.12 per litre respectively.

Kerosene which is used by majority in rural areas and urban informal settlement regions sustained another increase from Sh15.19 per litre witnessed in May-June adjustment to Sh0.35 per litre in June-July phase.

Following the new order, Super Petrol will retail at Sh182.04 per litre in Nairobi while Kerosene and Diesel will retail at Sh161.48 per litre and Sh167.28 per litre in the capital city.

In Mombasa, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will retail at Sh179.20 per litre, Sh164.45 per litre and Sh158.65 per litre respectively. In Kisumu, Kenya’s third largest City, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will retail at Sh181.87 per litre, Sh167.49 per litre and Sh161.70 per litre respectively.

In a statement, EPRA said the prices are inclusive of 8 per cent value added tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2018, the tax laws (Amendment) Act 2020 and the revised rates for excise duty for inflation as per Legal notice no.194 of 2020

During the period under review, EPRA said the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol decreased by 1.09 per cent from USD724.01 per cubic metres in April 2023 to USD716.15 per cubic metre in May 2023. Diesel increased by 0.84 per cent from USD688.07 per cubic metre to USD693.86 per cubic metre while Kerosene decreased by 0.83 per cent from USD699.54 per cubic metre to USD693.71 per cubic metre.

Over the same period, the mean monthly USD to Kenya Shilling exchange rate depreciated by 1.75 per cent from Sh138.96 per USD in April to Sh141.39 per USD in May.

Consumers in Kenya’s major towns like Nakuru and Eldoret will pay Sh181.18 per litre, Sh 166.78 per litre and Sh161.01 per litre for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene respectively in Nakuru while in Eldoret the prices of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will retail at Sh181.88 per litre, Sh167.49 per litre and Sh161.71 per litre respectively.
