The decline in the price of key items in the basket of households kept Kenya’s monthly inflation rate at 4.36%, the same level as the previous month.
The stagnant inflation is despite an increase in the price of fuel, transport, water and electricity.
The price of 2kg packet maize flour, a common ingredient on the meal table of most homes, declined to KSh 119.65 from KSh 123.68 in July 2020.
The largest price declines were recorded in a kilo of onions which fell from KSh 123.95 to KSh 103.64, a drop of 16.38% while that of tomatoes fell from KSh 96.19 to KSh 84.60, a 12.05% fall.
The price of a kilogram of spinach fell from KSh 58.21 to KSh 53.84 while a kilo of cabbages was retailing at KSh 36.54 from KSh 39.44
A kilo of Irish potatoes was retailing at KSh 62.21 in August from KSh 65.23 in July. The same commodity was retailing at KSh 70.27 in August 2019.
There was a 27.38% spike in the price of paraffin from KSh 66.41 to KSh 84.60 per litre between July and August 2020.
During the review period, the transport index increased by 2.11%, mainly due to an increase in the pump price of diesel and petrol by 2.07% and 3.14 % respectively.
The price of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels index went up by 1.24%.
This was attributed to the increase in the cost of electricity and kerosene by 0.52% and 27.38% respectively.
The Consumer Price Index, generated from selected retail outlets situated in 50 data collection zones in Nairobi and 36 other centres, increased by 0.20% from 108.35 in July to 108.57 in August 2020.
