Kenyan based solar energy firm M-Kopa helps avoid 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions across solar systems’ lifetimes while targeting to prevent 30 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030. The removal of carbon emissions through CO2 and black carbon comes from the replacement of kerosene lanterns off households.
According to the 2019 M-Kopa Impact Report, the firm says it achieves sustainability by helping households cut spending on kerosene and phone charging. As a result, their customers can save up to KSh 67, 400 ($650) in five years.
The company also promotes climate action through clean energy and efficient appliances. Solar-powered products from the company deliver more energy while using less power, leveraging on high efficiency. For instance, the report asserts that M-Kopa produces bulbs that are 10% more luminous yet require 20% less energy.
“We invest in R&D and product co-development with best-in-class hardware designers such as Phillips. This has ushered in a new generation of products that deliver more energy services with less power, setting important industry standards as the sector expands globally.” reads the report.
