Lufthansa to Unveil New Frankfurt to Mombasa Direct Flights in March 2021

Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, has announced plans to commence direct flights from Frankfurt to Mombasa and on to Zanzibar from 31st March 2021. The airline’s subsidiary, Eurowings will fly the route twice a week, operating an Airbus A330 with a capacity of 283 passengers.

Direct flights from Germany will boost Mombasa’s tourism and hospitality industry. The flights will also complement Lufthansa’s regular scheduled flights to Nairobi.

According to data from the Tourism Research Institute, Germany is the leading European tourist market source for Kenya, followed by France and Italy. Last year, total arrivals from Germany were 73,150.

Lufthansa is the flag carrier and largest German airline, which, when combined with its subsidiaries, is the second-largest airline in Europe in terms of passengers carried. Its subsidiary passenger airlines include Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings.

In June this year, Lufthansa, posted a net loss of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 2020, “significantly impacted” by the COVID-19 pandemic. This compares to a net loss of $384 million over the same period last year.
