Kenya Auto Bazaar Association has called its members for a meeting to deliberate on government’s recent push to phase out importation of eight-year-old vehicles.
The lobby group will meet at Nairobi’s Crown Plaza Upper Hill on Tuesday 29 this month in the evening at 6pm. The second consultative meeting will be convened on Wednesday Jan 30 at Mombasa’s Royal Court Hotel at the same time.
Through a directive contained in the Draft National Automotive Policy, Kenyans wishing to import 8-year old cars above 1,500cc “will be able to absorb the impact of higher prices and taxes” on the five-year models.
Eventually, the government hopes to cap the age limit to 3-years by 2021.
Car importers have opposed the move, saying they were never consulted.
