Laying of KSh3 Billion Fibre Optic Cable at Kenya South-Sudan Border Begins

Construction work on the 630 Km, KSh3 Billion high-speed fibre-optic cable at the Kenya-South Sudan border has begun. The project, funded by the World Bank and the Kenyan government, aims to improve internet connectivity in the remote areas in Northern Kenya.

Once completed, the high-speed fibre optic cable will significantly lower the cost of internet and ease communication in Eldoret, Kitale, Kakuma, Lokichar, Lodwar, and Lokichogio. According to the ICT Authority CEO Dr Katherine Getao, the fibre cable will provide internet speeds of up to 100GB/second to key government offices, hospitals, schools, and the local community. The ICT infrastructure will also be leased to local Telcom companies to raise money to maintain the project.

The project is part of the South Sudan-Eastern Africa Regional Transport, Trade and Development Facilitation Programme, which consists of the fibre optic cable and a superhighway linking towns close to the border of Kenya and South Sudan. It is expected to be completed by December 2021.
