The car cable project set to connect Mombasa Island to the South Coast might be delayed after a land issue arose between the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) and the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS).
The Likoni Cable Express is set to be a modern cable car system that will offer innovative transport services at the Likoni crossing channel.
KFS is responsible for providing transport services linking the mainland to the coastal islands.
The Land Problem
The issue between the two bodies arose after KeNHA declined KFS’s plans to establish a mainland cable car substation along the Likoni-Ukunda road unless they are compensated.
As a result, KFS has rescheduled the ground-breaking event for the Sh5.8 billion project which was to take place in June this year according to Bakari Gowa, managing director KFS.
To solve the problem, KFS plans to get compulsory land acquisition approvals from the Ministry of Lands and the National Land Commission (NLC) for the project and for the expansion of the landing area for commuters and vehicles.
Gowa said the project will still take place and all current barriers are being handled through discussions and engagements.
“There is no cause for alarm. We want to sort out all land issues with KeNHA,” he said adding that the project is also waiting for Cabinet endorsement.
The project is being sponsored by Trapos Limited, a Kenyan-based aerial transit development firm. KFS and Trapos Limited have signed a 25-year concession agreement.
