The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has impounded 21 foreign registered vehicles worth about Sh30 million. The vehicles were impounded during the weekend in a KRA operation in Mombasa, Taveta, and Lunga Lunga.
The aim of the operation was to eliminate all kinds of contraband such as prohibited goods and motor vehicles illegally imported into the country. In addition, the impounded vehicles, whose owners failed to give official import papers, were being driven by Kenyans rather than foreigners as stipulated by the law.
Therefore, the owners of the vehicles are feared to have broken Sec 117 of East African Customs Management Community ACT, 2004 and Regulations 134-137 of the East African Customs Management Regulations, 2004
“Investigations are ongoing and those who will be found culpable will either be prosecuted or shall be required to regularize the importation of these vehicles. However, all over age Vehicles (over 8 years) which are prohibited Imports shall be condemned and destroyed,” Mr N.K. Ngeera, KRA Deputy Commissioner, Southern Region said in a statement.
