On 18th March, a new law on cargo clearance came into effect. The regulation requires all cargo coming to Nairobi to be cleared at the Inland Container Depot Nairobi via the Standard Gauge Railway.
The rules are meant to improve efficiency at the Port of Mombasa and increase the amount of cargo moving through the SGR.
Following the change in clearance procedures, Kenya Revenue Authority plans to disable its Cargo Management System given that there’ll no more nominations of Cargo by KPA to Mombasa Container Freight Stations.
According to KRA officials, the rule will not apply to containerized shipments which will be permitted to move to the CFS after clearance with Customs officials.
A letter signed by KRA regional coordinator Southern Region urged KPA workers to team up with KRA officials in implementing “…government’s policy on efficient Port Management.”
