Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani has extended the term of KRA Commissioner James Mburu by an additional two years. Mburu will now serve at KRA’s helm for five years, after recently completing his three-year term.
James Mburu was previously the Commissioner of Intelligence and Strategic Operations, taking the leadership of the tax organization in July 2019 after the retirement of John Njiraini.
A report by Standard says that KRA’s board met and approved the extension of the Commissioner General’s tenure to allow more time to develop and implement the taxman’s strategies.
“The board felt three years are not enough to work effectively. Again, we are doing what regional countries have. Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda’s heads of revenue have their terms which are similar hence the need to change ours too,” Standard quotes a KRA insider.
Officials in the agency will now retire at either the age of 60 or after five years, whichever comes first.
