Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced plans to launch direct flights from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Hargeisa, Somaliland, by the end of March 2021.
In a statement, the two heads of state announced that the direct flights to Somaliland will involve not only KQ but also other Kenyan carriers.
The plans come barely five months after Kenya’s low-cost carrier, Jambojet, halted plans to launch direct flights from Nairobi to the Somali capital Mogadishu, citing high insurance needed to ply the route.
Kenya Airways has already resumed flying directly from Nairobi to New York City after suspending the key route in March this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The weekly non-stop flight resumed on Sunday 29th November 2020 offering customers who book tickets before 10th December 2020 discounts,” the airline said in a statement to the press.
