KQ Surprised By Union Threat To Call For Industrial Action

The national career Kenya Airways says its surprised by what it terms as destructive behaviour by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) who have threatened to down their tools ahead of Sunday’s inaugural direct flight from Nairobi  to New York. The workers say the airline has failed to agree with their terms on special pay and working conditions.

In a statement, the airline says their focus is to create employment directly and indirectly and therefore the unions call to its members to stay away from such a momentous occasion is incomprehensible as negotiations commenced last week and are yet to be concluded.

This even as key government officials including Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma are said to have met on Wednesday to finalise preparations for the historic flight set for the 28th October 2018.

More calls are being made to the workers union to put the country’s interest first with the Transport secretary James Macharia calling for reason to prevail in reference to the standoff, promising that his ministry had engaged the airline’s board of directors to speedily resolve the matter.
