The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has named Amb. John Mwangemi as the new acting managing director with effect from 1st July 2021, as the agency looks for a suitable candidate to fill the position. Amb. Mwangemi takes over from Eng. Rashid Salim, who also served in an acting capacity for 15 months.
“Amb. John Mwangemi is the immediate former Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to Djibouti and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He previously served as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Rwanda. He has also held executive leadership positions in the corporate world locally and internationally, ” a statement on the KPA website reads.
Amb. John Mwangemi will play a vital role in leading the Kenya Ports Authority seeing that the KPA chairman General (Rtd) Joseph Kibwana stepped down from his leadership role in June this year, alongside three other board members.
Kenya Ports Authority has had difficulties in its leadership as Amb. Mwangemi is the fourth appointee to the position in less than four years. Senior officials at the port face numerous counts of corruption including a recent report by the auditor general pointing to the possible loss of over KSh4.2 billion.
KPA’s former managing director, Daniel Manduku, resigned in March last year after being accused of engaging in corrupt practices. The former MD was charged with the suspected loss of Sh2 billion at the government agency. Investigations into the corruption allegations at KPA are still ongoing.
