United Millers plans to establish milling plants in Uganda and Tanzania as part of a new strategy to expand its business in the Lake Victoria region.

The Kisumu based flour producer, which is ranked among the country’s top millers says favourable trade policies between the East African statesis the main reason for expansion.

“There are opportunities and the potential in the region given the growing population in Kisumu and the expanding market in Uganda and Tanzania,” says owner of the firm Sunil. He said apart from maize flour being a staple food for many residents of Nyanza and Western regions, there was also increasing demands for processed flour among the semi-urban dwellers.

Sunil said the firm has weathered the storm of competition and unstable market in Kenya to maintain its top-ten position in the market. “After a tough political season, United Millers hopes to improve its presence in the region,” he said.
