Kenya’s Tourism Earnings Hit KSh163.5 Billion

Earnings from Kenya’s tourism sector hit a high of KSh163.5 billion in 2019. This signifies a 3.9% increase as compared to 2018, where KSh157.4 billion was raised.

The Star reports that in 2019, the number of tourists hit 2.04 million compared to 2.02 million in 2018.

Additionally, the Cabinet Secretary in charge of the tourism sector Najib Balala applauded the introduction of direct flights from Nairobi to New York, saying that it cemented the US position as the top tourists source for Kenya. In 2019, tourists from US were 245,437, compared to 225,157 in 2018.

Despite the growth in earnings, Balala opined that the recent wake of terror attacks in the country may discourage tourists from visiting Kenya. This might, in one way or another, hinder the sector from reaching its potential.
