Kenya's Most Popular TV Radio Stations Q1 2017

Market research group GeoPoll has analyzed the ratings and audience of top TV and Top Radio Stations in Kenya for the first three months of 2017 using data collected through its ‘Media Measurement Service.’

    Television Ratings

Using the daily data collected through its Media measurement service, GeoPoll has analyzed the top TV stations in Kenya for Q1 2017. The below chart shows the average ratings for the top 10 stations during the peak hours, from 19:00 to 21:30.The Kenyan Wallstreet

Citizen has the highest ratings during peak hours at the national level. Its highest rating is during primetime at 8.30PM with an average of 10.83. KTN was second in rating with a higher peak only between 7-7.30PM. At 9.30PM, there is a tie between NTV and KTN while the rest of the times 8-10PM NTV overtakes it. KTN News consistently takes the fourth position during the peak hours nationally.

On average, Citizen TV leads with the highest share of 33.7% of viewers followed by KTN at 11.1% then KTN News at 8.5% nationally. Nation Media Group’s NTV is fourth with an average of 8.5% in the share of viewers.

Its worth noting that Citizen TV’s share in viewership has dropped significantly from more than 44% as of Dec 2014 when it used to call itself “Kenya’s fastest growing television station.” The drop is attributed to the Digital Migration which was effected in February 2015, a move that led to emergence of smaller TV stations which are now eating into the market share of the dominant players.

Interestingly, KTN News which is exactly two years old has surpassed a number of indigenous Stations including NTV, K24, KBC.

According to Kenya’s Communication Authority, there are 66 local TV stations as of December 2016 but only a few dominate in terms of audience size.

Radio Maisha owned by NSE listed Standard Media Group takes the second ratings position with its highest point being between 6-8AM with an average of 5.16, while Radio Africa Group’s Jambo station was third in the ratings.

On average, Citizen Radio takes the top spot with a share of 16.2%, Radio Maisha with 12.8% followed by Jambo which maintains its third position in share with an average of 9.2%.The Kenyan Wallstreet

“The high share of 34.0% for other stations not within the top 10 shows the large number of radio stations in Kenya, which broadcast across the country at a regional level.” said Geopoll.
