Local carmaker, Mobius Motors has announced plans to expand into Uganda and Tanzania, even as it ramps up production of its second-generation model which costs KSh1.5 million.
The first generation vehicle is no longer in the market. Only 50 units were made as proof of concept, travelling more than 1.6 million kilometres combined on Kenyan roads.
Mobius also launched model III late last year, a larger sports utility vehicle priced at KSh3.9 million. The vehicle has zero millage and full 3 years/60,000km warranty.
The firm said it will continue upgrading its models sticking to SUVs rather than venture into different car models as an expansion strategy.
Mobius Motors is a Kenyan automobile startup founded in 2010 to manufacture vehicles for the African market. It was incorporated in the United Kingdom in 2010 and registered in Kenya in 2011. It is the only automobile company in Kenya and one of the two automobile companies in the East African region with Kiira Motors of Uganda being the other one.
Last year, the company launched a new KSh330 million manufacturing plant in Nairobi. According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Nicolas Guibert, the factory will produce at least eight units daily. Additionally, the assembly line for passenger vehicles at the facility incorporates fabrication, body shop, paint shop, general assembly, and final line testing.
