The Bandari Maritime Academy situated in Mombasa recently signed an agreement with the City of Glasgow College to support the academy’s goal of becoming a Maritime Centre of Excellence in East Africa. The partnership will enable the two institutions to create and deliver maritime educational programmes in the region.
City of Glasgow College is a highly reputable UK-based college known for its nautical science and engineering courses. The school trains merchant navy officers, chief engineers, and master mariners.
The agreement signed on 15th July created a strong link between Bandari Maritime Academy and the UK college. The two schools agreed to jointly develop teaching materials, conduct workshops, seminars, collaborative research, and to certify training programmes for students, faculties and industry.
Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Bandari Maritime Academy CEO Francis Muraya said, “We are very pleased to establish this relationship with City of Glasgow College. Their wealth of expertise and knowledge will help us achieve our ambition to meet our country’s growing skills demand within the maritime sector. We look forward to working and collaborating with the college at this exciting stage in our Academy’s development.”
Paul Little, Principal and Chief Executive at City of Glasgow College, said, “Our Faculty of Nautical and STEM has strong business links across Africa, Asia and the Americas, specifically in providing academic qualifications and mandatory safety training for marine industry professionals. We’re proud to now be working with Bandari to help deliver relevant, high quality training to a new generation of seafarers.”
Kenya aims to develop its blue economy in order to create jobs for many unemployed youths in the country. The agreement is one of the ways the country will advance its maritime sector and create employment.
