Kenya's Cargo to Fly Directly into the US

Kenya's Cargo to Fly Directly into the US

The US and Kenya have signed an amendment to the US-Kenya Air Transport Agreement – adding seventh-freedom traffic rights for all cargo operations to the bilateral Air Transport Agreement.

In addition, the amended agreement will see cargo airlines fly directly between the countries and allow operation of mutual air cargo hubs.

Specifically, Airlines from Kenya and all-cargo service have the right to perform international air transport from points behind Kenya via Kenya and intermediate points to the United States and beyond.

On the other hand, U.S. all-cargo airlines will fly between Kenya and a third nation without the need to stop in the United States, an important right if operating a cargo hub. Kenyan all-cargo carriers have reciprocal rights to serve the United States.

In December 4, 2019 the two countries held bilateral negotiations to modernize and strengthen their aviation relationship and to expand all-cargo international air transport opportunities.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is in the US this week to seek closer economic and commercial partnerships with the world’s largest economy.

The rights in the Amendment facilitate the movement of goods throughout the world by providing air carriers greater flexibility to meet their cargo and express delivery customers’ needs more efficiently.

The new arrangement is open to all-cargo airlines, exporters, and consumers fully opening the Kenyan air cargo sector to U.S. carriers.
