Kenyans Cut Down on Personal Websites as Uptake Drops by 25%

Kenyans cut down on online visibility in the last three months of 2024, with the number of personal websites registered under the me.ke subdomain declining by 24.6% during that period.

    • •A personal website allows individuals to create a professional online presence and can act as a digital calling card, helping them stand out in a competitive job market or online community.
    • •According to sector statistics by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) Personal Websites and E-mail (me.ke) dropped to 3, 426 by the end of last year from 4,590 in the previous quarter.
    • •However, during the period under review, the total number of users registered to .KE domains grew by 1.3 percent to 108,154 primarily during to growth in the .co.ke, .ke, and sc.ke sub-domains.

Propelling the growth were non-governmental organisations, Lower and Middle-Level Institutions, institutions of higher education that registered impressive growth in their sub-domain names.

The ne.ke subdomain, which is also used for personal websites and email only grew by three new users during the quarter.

The total number of cyber threats detected during the quarter increased by 27.2% to 840.9 million. In response to cyber threat events detected, the National KE-CIRT/CC issued 11.6 million advisories marking 20.9% increase compared to last quarter.
