A Parliamentary committee on Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock have proposed a ban on shipping of raw and powdered milk in a bid to salvage the local industry.
Vice Chairman Emmanuel Wangwe said that the ban must be enforced because importation has led to surplus milk in the market yet dairy farmers produce enough milk to sustain Kenyans.
“The continuous importation of liquid and powdered milk is undermining dairy farmers and is likely to drive the sector to oblivion as happened in sugarcane and maize farming,” the legislator told the press at Parliament Buildings.
Data from the Agriculture ministry reveal that the country imported 70 million litres and 10 million kilogrammes of powdered milk in 2018 and an additional 15 million litres of liquid milk and 1.5 million kilogrammes of powdered milk in January 2019.
