Kenya and Turkey intend to sign new cooperation agreements that will solidify their relationship. According to Turkey’s Ambassador to Kenya, Ahmet Cemil Miroglu, the two countries aim to use the cooperation agreements to avoid double taxation.
Kenya shares good bilateral relations with Turkey. Turkey established an embassy in Kenya in 1968.
The Turkish Ambassador to Kenya Ahmet Miroglu said that Turkey has invited President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ms. Raychelle Omamo, the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, to the annual Antalya Diplomatic Forum happening in late March.
The Antalya Diplomatic Forum is a meeting in Turkey of as political leaders, diplomats, opinion makers, academics, where they discuss solutions to regional and global challenges.
Kenya and Turkey have strong trade relations. According to Ahmet Miroglu, Trade volume between the two nations massively increased from KSh5.2 billion ($52 million) in 2005 to KSh23.5 billion ($235 million) in 2019.
Kenya mainly exports agricultural products such as coffee, tea, and fresh vegetables to the Eastern Europe nation. On the other hand, Turkey’s exports to Kenya include; processed foods, construction materials, home appliances, and petroleum products.
Besides the strong trade ties, Turkish Airlines conduct daily flights between Nairobi and Istanbul. Additionally, the carrier also operates five flights a week between Istanbul and the coastal city of Mombasa.
Ahmet Miroglu added that the Turkish government encourages companies to invest in Kenya and boost the economy through job creation.
