The 2020 World Travel Awards (WTA) named Nairobi as the Continent’s leading Business Travel Destination, putting Kenya on the map as a top business destination. This position was contested by Accra, Cairo, Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Pretoria.
The country was named Africa’s Leading Destination for its “tantalizing cocktail of epic savannah landscapes, immense herds of wildlife and palm-fringed beaches” ahead of 12 other countries, including South Africa, and Tanzania. the country had won the award four times since 1996 when WTA launched the category. South Africa, however, won the title 16 times.

Kenya Tourism Board was nominated as Africa’s Leading Tourist Board in 2020. Speaking on the award, the board’s Chairman Jimi Kariuki promised to improve the sector’s offering as travel resumes.
“This is a big encouragement to everybody in the tourism sector and shows that even as we go through this difficult time, Kenya still remains the top destination in Africa. We shall continue to improve our tourism products and to showcase our diverse offerings globally so that we remain ready for take-off once travel resumes fully,” The Star quotes Kariuki.
In the airline industry, WTA named Kenya Airways as the Continent’s leading airline in businesses and economic class. The carrier also won Africa’s Leading Airline Brand in 2020. Ethiopian Airlines took the crown as Africa’s Leading Airlines in 2020. Cape Town International Airport was voted as Africa’s Leading Airport.
In the hospitality industry, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club was voted Africa’s Leading Hotel while Aberdare Country Club won the Continent’s leading Green Hotel Category.
The World Travel Awards are recognized as a hallmark of quality in the tourism industry, recognizing and rewarding excellence in different regions of the world since 1993.
