Kenya Signs KES 50 Billion Deal with European Commission to Build Electric Bus Rapid Lane

Kenya and the European Commission have signed a KES 50 billion (EUR 347.6 million) financing agreement to construct the first dedicated electric bus rapid lane in East Africa.

The agreement accord was attained at the European Union Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, where President William Ruto met with the President of the European Commission, vonderleye.

President Ruto emphasized Kenya’s dedication to achieving a green transition, as outlined in the nation’s climate change mitigation plan.

Furthermore, the Green Mobility-Nairobi core bus rapid transit line 3 (BRT 3) is set to incorporate zero-emission electric buses, along with implementing intelligent transport system features, providing affordable fare options, ensuring accessibility to the public transport system for marginalized groups such as youth, women and low-income households, and prioritizing traveller safety.

The Roads & Transport CS signed the agreement and, in addition, engaged in a conversation with the other leader on various significant topics of common concern, such as trade & investment, embracing climate change, healthcare, and technology.
