Kenya Sept Inflation Rises to 5.70%

KNBS data indicates that inflation stood at 5.70 per cent in September up from 4.04 per cent in August 2018. On the other hand, the consumer price index increased by 1.02 per cent from 192.18 in August to 194.14 in September 2018.

    The Performance

Between August and September 2018, food and non-alcoholic drinks’ index surged by 0.37 per cent while the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel’s index increased by 0.47 per cent in September. These numbers were as a result of an increase in the price of some foodstuffs and the review of the electricity tariff structure.

The transport index grew by 7.99 per cent in September 2018 compared to August due to the increase in pump prices of diesel and petrol which increased the price of other transport aspects.

The report indicates that matatu fares stood at an average price of Sh449.77 per 250-kilometres compared to Sh416.75. The price of diesel increased from Sh103.69 per litre in August 2018 to Sh108.97 per litre in September 2018. The price of diesel in September last year was Sh87.84 per litre. On the other hand, the price of petrol rose from Sh114.58 in August to Sh117.54 in September per litre.

The price of electricity increased from Sh4,392.82 per 200Kwh in August to Sh4,394.80 per 200Kwh in September 2018.

The past month saw the 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products increase pump and fare prices but was later reduced to 8 per cent through the Finance Act 2018.
