The Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has announced plans to disburse KSh55 billion to four state agencies to maintain the country’s road network over the next ten months.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) will receive the biggest chunk of the funds (KSh26.6 billion) for rehabilitation of 48,418 kilometres of road, which accounts for 30% of the entire road network in the country.
Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) will get KSh14.6 billion for Class C roads, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) will receive KSh6.7 billion, while Kenya Wildlife Service will receive KSh651 million.
The total planned length comprises various works categories, including routine maintenance on 25,361 kilometres, periodic maintenance on 916 kilometres, performance-based maintenance contracts on 9,422 kilometres, spot improvement on 7,695 kilometres and, upgrading on 24 kilometres of roads across the country.
In its 2018/2022 strategic plan, the Kenya Roads Board said it requires KSh150 billion annually to maintain the country’s road network.
