Kenya Railways Corporation is set to restart the passenger operations on the revamped Nairobi-Nanyuki line on Friday, 11th December 2020.
The Kenya Railways Corporation injected KSh1.2 billion out of KSh3 billion used to revamp the Nairobi-Nanyuki line, with Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) pumping in the rest through the Treasury as special dividends.
Commuters travelling from Nairobi to Nanyuki will pay KSh200 fare on second class coaches, and between KSh50 and KSh100 for inter-terminus trips. These inter-terminus trips will serve Murang’a, Karatina, Kiganjo, Sagana, Makuyu, Maragua, Chaka, and Naromoru stations.
The passenger service has been scheduled to only operate on Fridays and Sundays, with the frequency set to increase subject to demand.
With a capacity of up to 1,600 passengers on a single trip, the train will leave Nairobi at 8 a.m. to arrive in Nanyuki at 2 p.m. It will leave Nanyuki on Sunday at 8 a.m. to arrive in Nairobi at 2 p.m.
Already, cargo operations on the rehabilitated 240-kilometer Nairobi-Nanyuki started in August and targets goods like fuel, fertilizers, hardware, cereals, and other farm produce.
