Kenya Railways Denies Breakdown of Diesel Multiple Units

Kenya Railways has said all its Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) which operate under Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR) service are in good shape, contrary to media reports.

    • •According to Railways, 11 DMUS acquired in 2020 operate on Meter Gauge Railway lines run daily as per schedule.
    • •When DMUS began operations, Kenya Railways had scheduled them to operate along Nairobi – Syokimau and Embakasi routes.
    • •However, due to high number of customers plying Syokimau route, they rededicated the DMUS to serve Embakasi route and provided a high-capacity train for Syokimau route.

Acquisition of DMUS was in line with Kenya Railways Commuter Rail Masterplan, which aims at revitalizing Nairobi Commuter Rail service. DMUS have been functional and continue addressing the immediate actions identified under the Masterplan for provision of reliable, safe and comfortable modern rail transport services.

“Implementation of Phase One (1) of the Masterplan has been successful, leading to an increased demand of commuter service. KR is therefore in the process of implementing Phase Two (2) of the Masterplan under Nairobi Railway City Project which entails, among others, purchase of new high capacity Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs) with a sitting capacity of 1200 Pax, double capacity of existing DMUS. Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs) are an Eight Car set comprising of motorized and non-motorized units that can be detached to sub sets of lower capacity,” said Kenya Railways in a statement.
