Kenya Railways has notified the public that its Nairobi rail commuters will, from December 24, 2020, and January 3, 2021, do without the rail services as the end-year festive season gets into top gear.
Kenya Railways has suspended Nairobi Commuter rail service to Ruiru, Embakasi, Kikuyu, and Syokimau for ten days ending on January 3, 2021. This means those city dwellers working during the festive season could have nightmares reaching their work stations.
However, operations on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) express service and the Madaraka Express passenger service will be uninterrupted.
The commuter link to and from the SGR terminus will also remain operational during the festive season.
This is especially so for commuters with Nairobi’s Eastlands area, who have said they will opt for the JKIA Express train that passes through the region.
This decision is not expected to cause any transport hiccups to travelers, avoiding the congested road transport in and out of the city during the festive season.
As usual, bus companies, especially those plying the routes to Western Kenya and Nyanza, have reported heavy bookings as Kenyans rush to spend Christmas in their rural homes.
Other services that will maintain normalcy include that from Nairobi to Nanyuki and the city to Mombasa.
“We will be scaling down our Nairobi Commuter Rail operations this festive season. These services, however, will not affect JKIA Express Service, Nairobi-Mombasa Madaraka Express Passenger Service, SGR link train and Nanyuki Safari train,” said Kenya Railways on its Twitter handle.
