Kenya Power has issued a public notice cautioning unlicensed communication networks from attaching their fibre optic cables onto their distribution poles when offering internet, television, communication and other services to houses and businesses.
The notice has given encroachers fourteen days to remove the installations, failure to which necessary action will be taken against them, including but not limited to bringing down the illegal networks and/or instituting legal action.
The firm argues that such activities constitute a breach of their wayleave trace and safety clearances, and which have in some instances caused accidents along roads and in private homes, thus endangering public safety and life.
The firm, which has also been in the fiber optic business since 2010, has signed lease agreements with a number of telecommunications operators including Safaricom, Airtel, Liquid Telecom Ltd, Jamii Telecommunications, Indigo Telecommunication Ltd and Wananchi Telecom Ltd.
