Kenya Power Lightening Company has awarded Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems a three year Ksh 3.4Billion contract starting June to supply 8000 transformers in Kenya. Toshiba emerged the winner among the 40 bidders that included Technical Associates of India, Tana Lake of Tanzania and Jiangzu of China.
The $34 million contract with Kenya Power & Lighting Company includes the installation of transformers in Nairobi, Mombasa and surrounding regions.
“The criteria for award was largely based on ability to deliver quality equipment and capacity to distribute,” said Kenya Power CEO Mr Ben Chumo adding that contract was largely driven by large scale programmes such as the ‘Last Mile Connectivity’ and maintenance work hence the supply will be on a need basis.
“The key reason why the rest of the 40 bidders were dropped is the new specifications we demanded that would make transformers last longer,” said KPLC’s head of supply Mr Benard Ngugi arguing that local bidders were locked out as being a manufacturer was part of the criteria in choosing the winner.
Toshiba Corporation was in 2011 awarded a contract to supply four 70,000kW steam turbines and generators for Kenya’s largest ever geothermal plant project, the Olkaria I and Olkaria IV geothermal power plants. The contract was then Toshiba’s first for the supply of geothermal power equipment in Africa.
