Police have launched investigations into attacks on online taxi operators – Uber, warning that those found to have participated in criminal acts will be prosecuted.

“The National Police Service has launched investigations into the cause and nature of attacks and will ensure that those behind these attacks face full force of the law,” Ministry of Interior spokesperson Mwenda Njoka said in a statement.

Mr Njoka said attacks and intimidation cannot be allowed to flourish in Kenya, noting that criminal acts of terrorising taxi operations will not be tolerated.

“Business rivalry should never be settled through attacks and intimidation but rather through established legal mechanisms of solving disputes,” he warned.

This comes after US based online taxi operator – Uber taxis were attacked at several places within Nairobi. Uber is a low-cost transport model that seamlessly connects riders to drivers through an application, where users pay per kilometer driven rather than a flat rate. Meanwhile, Kenya United Taxi Organisation gives government a seven-day ultimatum to solve wrangles between them and Uber taxis.
