Kenya Enters Public Private Partnership to Develop Power Transmission Lines

Kenya has signed a Public Private Partnership(PPP) agreement with Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited(POWERGRID) to finance, construct and operate the 400 kV Lessos-Loosul and 200kV Kisumu-Musaga electricity transmission lines.

This will be the first independent power transmission(IPT)in the country and Africa, to be financed on a PPP basis.

The project will improve supply and reliability of power transmission in Western parts of the country.

POWERGRIP will provide technical and operational support to the project while Africa 50 will provide project development and finance expertise and act as a bridge between the Government and private investors.

” We are pleased to partner with the Kenya Government and POWERGRID to implement this poineering project in one of their shareholder countries. Alot of emphasis has been on attracting private investment in energy production infrastructure in Africa, It is time to focus on catalysing private investment into development of power transmission networks as these are a critical link to improving electricity access, especially in underserved communities,” said Alain Ebobisse, Africa50 CEO

Shri K. Sreekant POWERGRID Chairman and MD said a robust transmission network not only impacts reliability and security to the grid but also allows non-discrininatory access to buyers and sellers resulting into competitive prices to the consumer.

POWERGRIP plans to use this transmission project as a model for other such undertakings in Africa.
