The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) has laid off 119 employees through voluntary retirement in its Ksh 1.8 Billion ongoing restructuring exercise in which the state-owned meat processor aims to return to profitability.
The management says it had 420 employees but this has been reduced to 301 due to unsustainable wage bill.
The factory has the capacity to slaughter 1,000 large animals and 1,500 small ones daily and it wants to grow its income via exports to Dubai, China, Angola and Nigeria.
