Kenya has introduced an automated platform to detect traffic violations and issue penalties electronically
- •The system, rolled out by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), automatically generates traffic violation notifications and sends them to motorists through SMS.
- • Officials say that the platform operates without direct human involvement, with the aim of improving transparency and efficiency in the management of traffic offences.
- •Drivers who receive a violation notice are required to settle the fine within seven days, after which period unpaid fines will begin to accrue interest.
Motorists with outstanding fines may also face restrictions when attempting to access services on NTSA platforms until the penalties are cleared. The agency oversees vehicle registration, driver licensing, and other transport-related services in Kenya.
According to data from the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries remain among the lead causes of death globally, with low- and middle-income countries accounting for a large share of fatalities.
Kenyan authorities have previously indicated that technology-based enforcement tools- including traffic cameras, digital ticketing, and centralized databases- can help reduce opportunities for corruption and ensure more consistent application of traffic laws.
