The Government of Kenya has invited bids for the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT system) that will be implemented on Thika Superhighway.
According to Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia, the project will cost Ksh 5.8 billion to construct. Construction of the same will take 18 months.
Tender documents for the project indicate that the successful bidder will sign a fixed-price contract with Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority. They will, therefore, provide the required Design and Construction Services.
Additionally, the project will be carried out in two phases. Phase one will cover the section between Clay works and Nairobi CBD. Phase two will then cover Clay works-Ruiru and Nairobi CBD-Kenyatta National Hospital section.
The tender for the project closes on 10th December 2019. There will also be a mandatory pre-bid meeting on the same day at Clayworks.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has already ordered 26 buses from South Africa. They will be used for the project on the Superhighway as well as on Ngong road.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a bus-based public transport system designed to improve capacity and reliability relative to a conventional bus system. Typically, a BRT system includes roadways that are dedicated to buses, and gives priority to buses at intersections where buses may interact with other traffic.
