The government has assembled a three-day conference to discuss on the plans to cut public wage bill by about Ksh 182 billion. The conference aims to discuss the country’s rising wage bill.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), arranged for the meeting with an aim to bring together state departments, ministries, commissions and county heads as well as representatives from the private sector and civil societies.
The public wage bill reduced from 57% of revenues in 2013 to 48.1% in 2018. The revenue reduction was due to revenue growth and initiatives by the SRC. However, the wage bill needs to achieve not more than 35% of revenue as per the Public Financial Management regulations 2015.
Therefore, for the government to achieve the wage bill target of 35% of revenues, the solution will have to trim public sector salaries and allowances by at least Ksh 182 billion.
