Kenya Govt Bans Importation of 2nd hand Vehicles Under 2011

The Kenyan government has placed a ban on the importation of second hand vehicles whose first year of registration is below 1st January 2011.

The announcement was made through a notice in a local newspaper by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

“We wish to notify all importers of used second hand motor vehicles including returning residents, diplomatic staff and the genera public that only motor vehicles that whose year of first registration is from 1st January 2011 and later shall be allowed into the country as from 1st January 2018.” Read part of the notice.

The statement says that the order takes effect from January 1, 2018. In other words the government is giving importers, to whom it may concern, the whole of December to sort out their vehicle imports at the port of entry.

“Further, certificates of roadworthiness for vehicles whose first year of first registration is 2010 will not be valid after 31st December 2017. All vehicles issued with such certificates must have arrived at the port of entry by 31st December 2017. Any 2010 models arriving after 31st Dec 2017 will be deemed not to be complying and shall be rejected at the port of entry.”

Its important to note that when computing duty, it is the year of first registration that is used to determine the depreciation of the motor vehicles.
