Kenya Government through parliament has approved a total of Ksh600 million for payment of Uchumi Supermarket suppliers in Tanzania and Uganda who were left stranded when the retailer closed its operations in the two countries.
In October 2015, Uchumi closed shop in the two countries citing unprofitability and in turn leaving more than 900 people jobless. During that time, it owed the local suppliers a total of Ksh 350 Million in Tanzania and Ksh250 million in Uganda.
According to Tanzania based Citizen Newpaper, Uchumi CEO, Julius Kipng’etich had also invited suppliers from Tanzania to Kenya and assured them that the cash would hit their bank accounts once technicalities between the two governments are completed.
