The value of Kenyan exports in the first eight months of 2020 jumped to KSh 423.3 billion, a KSh 20 billion increase from the same period in 2019 according to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.
Food and beverage such as tea, coffee, fruits and vegetables accounted for the largest share of exports while non-food industrial exports accounted for a small part of the total exports.
The top export markets for Kenyan goods were Pakistan, Uganda, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Rwanda.
Imports into the country in the first eight months of 2020 decreased by 10% to KSh1.053 trillion from KSh1.18 trillion the year before. The decline in the value of imports can be attributed to the disruptions caused by the COVID19 pandemic. Non-food industrial supplies were the top import goods, while food and beverages formed the smallest share of imports.
China and India were the major importers into Kenya in the period under review. China brought in goods worth KSh 227 billion from January to August 2020, compared to KSh 232 billion worth of imports in the same period in 2019.
