The Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) has announced plans to launch the revised draft of dairy regulations on 9th March 2020.
The board initially introduced the law to the public in March 2019, which were met with gross protests from dairy farmers, terming them as derogatory and meant to hinder them from the business.
Some of these laws include:
- Farmers should not sell milk anywhere before pasteurization
- Milk must be sold based on quality
- Farmers should only sell their produce to contracted processors
- Cooling of milk be done within the shortest time possible to prevent multiplication of unwanted bacteria
- Penalties and fines for various offences were pegged at a maximum of KSh500,000.
However, the dairy board argued that the regulations were solely meant to enable Kenyan farmers’ milk to meet international standards, as well as encourage quality and competition, both locally and internationally.
Still, the board bowed to pressure from the protests and shelved the proposed regulations.
So now, the Kenya Dairy Board is set to bring back the revised laws for public participation, starting on 9th March in Kakamega, Kitale, Garissa, and Nyeri, with final public participation on 17th March at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
