The Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development Betty Maina recently appointed new members to the Consumer Protection Advisory Committee. The committee was created under the Consumer Protection Act, 2012 and its main duties are to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities.
Some of the new members appointed to the Consumer Protection Advisory Committee are; Francis Orago, Henry Ochieng, Clement Onyango, Jackson Kosgei, Dr Jackline Kitulu, Miriam Bomett, Elizabeth Wangari Odhiambo, Charles Makone, and Benard Nguyo. According to a notice published in the Kenya Gazette, the members will serve on the committee for a period of three years.
Kenya has several government agencies that work to protect consumers. The agencies include the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Communications Authority of (CA), Anti-counterfeit Authority (ACA), Kenya Consumer Protection Advisory Committee (KECOPAC), Department of Weights and Measures, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), and Medical Practitioners & Dentists Board.
In addition, there are various consumer organizations that look out for consumers in Kenya such as; Consumer Unit Trust Society (CUTS), Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK), Consumer International Network (CIN), Kenya Consumer Organization (KCO),
Healthcare Consumers Federation of Kenya (HCFK), Insurance Consumers Federation of Kenya (ICFK) and Association of Insurance Consumers of Kenya (AICK).
