Phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which links Nairobi and Naivasha towns, is now complete.
Currently, testing to ensure the railway’s system meets the requisite safety standards is ongoing, with procedures such as integration of tracks, trains, signalling and communications into a safe operating unit that feeds information about track use and activity to the Centralised Traffic Control.
Construction of the 120-kilometre railway line by the China Communication Construction Company(CCCC) which started in October 2016, has cost a total of Kshs 150 billion, financed by the Exim Bank of China and the Government of Kenya.
Once operational, the line will have the longest railway tunnel (Ngong Tunnel) in the East African region measuring about 4.5 km, with stop stations in Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Mai Mahiu and Suswa.
The first phase of the Standard Gauge Railway involved the construction of a railway line linking the Coastal town of Mombasa and Nairobi. Phase 2B of the project will run between Nairobi, Naivasha, Narok, Bomet, Nyamira and Kisumu. Phase 2C of the SGR will connect Kisumu and Malaba through Yala and Mumias.
